I've been a dedicated endorser of Isaiah Toothtaker for almost a year now and for good reason. His Machina Muerte crew is creeping into the LA scene, securing a night at Low End and his most recent video got a premiere from LA Weekly. Welcome to that friendly place called “in Isaiah's pocket”, boys.
Isaiah's latest burner is inspired by internet meme Antoine Dodson's famous threats to a bedroom intruder. Dodson's effeminate voice took the venom out of his threats, but Isaiah, on the other hand, is a tatted-up former bare knuckle street boxer and drug pusher. He received his tattoo tutelage from the Hell's Angels before opening his own shop Staring Without Caring. Unlike Dodson, who's just a real life loony tunes character, Isaiah is well connected and casually brandishes a hammer in his grip while rapping to the camera.
INTRUDER from Isaiah Toothtaker on Vimeo.
Produced by former Wavves drummer Jacob Safari, “Intruder” borrows the North Carolina A&T’s marching band’s interpretation of the Antoine Dodson song. As silly as I thought this track would be, it didn't need the graphic video images to supply a feeling of impending menace. Is this the apex of internet meme music? Are we dangerously close to meme-rap as a genre?
Isaiah Toothtaker's Illuminati Thug Mafia is out January 25 on Machina Muerte/Alpha Pup.
