A few years ago, leftist students in the south-western Mexican city of Oaxaca seized their city center, set up barricades, called for revolution and bombed a McDonald’s. Even before that conflagration, the city hosted a thriving street art culture, but the events of 2006 help to add a layer of political urgency to the work’s ongoing presence. Well, maybe not to the cupid heart with testicles you will see below, but it’s difficult to ignore the influence of revolutionary slogans with politicians and freedom fighter grafted onto the sun-baked stone walls.
