Sans Temps Morts is Nate Dorr’s daily New York City events guide.

Saturday, 15 November ::

And here is easily the most interesting avant/jazz bill of the week. Call it the Talibam-successfully-returned-from-Europe Celebration:

Talibam!, Microkingdom, Christopher Meeder. At Dead Herring, 141 S. 5th st. #1E, btwn Bedford and Driggs, Williamsburg, under the bridge. 8pm doors, $tba.

Whereas most noise comes about by largely bypassing rhythm and melody, or at least burying them in atonal feedback and fuzz, Talibam!'s supremely skilled duo of Matt Mottel and Kevin Shea are able to pull off heavy noise surges through complicated, controlled bursts of keyboarded dissonance and drums that rattle chaotically all around a rhythm without ever quite letting go of it. And a Talibam! set is nothing if not surprising, both in the improvisational blind alleys even familiar songs spin off down without warning, and in Shea and Mottel's extremely strnage stage banter. So, let's welcome them home in style. Aiding in that cause: Baltimore “no-jazz” spaz spirals via Microkingdom and Christopher Meeder, who will be performing Kurt Schwitters' dada sonata Ursonate (how often are you possibly going to have opportunity to hear that?). Plus, there should be a ridiculous number of new Talibam! split EPs and whatnot to grab from the band here, as this has been an extremely productive year for them.

Perhaps equally compelling, though is Sleep When Dead's Market Hotal booking of the evening, which isn't even a band:

Remember last spring, when you heard about an amazing theater adaptation of your favorite movie of 5th grade, Jurassic Park? And then you discovered you were two days late and it was gone back to the cretaceous (Baltimore), never to be seen again? Well, thanks to science, second chances do come along once in a while. Yes, Wham City's Shoot Her! the Jurassic Park Play has been recreated from DNA extracted from the sucked blood of mosquitos trapped in amber since last March, and now roams again, eating tourists in exactly the way that the animatronic pirates do not. See them live at 1142 Broadway at Myrtle, Bushwick. All Ages. 8pm. $tba.

WFMU show: Yeasayer, Ponytail, Graffiti Monsters at the Skirball Center, 566 LaGuardia Place at Washington Square South, West Village. All Ages. 8pm doors, $12.

I think every good bill of the night must have been required to take a Baltimore band in (or theater troupe as the case may be). Or is that just a given of good bills these days? Either way, this is a good bill and its nod to Charm City (“The Greatest City in America”) comes in the excellent form of vividly finger-painted prog punk quartet Ponytail. With 8-bit-steeped rock project Graffiti Monsters, and New Age optimism-inflected medium rockers Yeasayer.
