Louisville’s pop/rock quintet Frederick The Younger – comprised of Jenni Cochran, Aaron Craker, Matt Kohorst, John Barrera, and Dave Givan – have been gearing up to release their debut album Human Child for quite some time. Though it’s not due until February 3rd, we’ve got the exclusive on their fun, new single “Tell Me”.
Steady, enchanting percussion brings us into the track and prepares us for the mellifluous vocals in this song. At times almost spoken, the vocals are quirky as they explore the ups and downs of a relationship while they “try to find [their] way back to you”. Lyrics like “who do you think you are, to come and go as you please? / Tell me” all the listener to empathize, while they sway their hips.
Aaron Craker had quite a bit to say about the track.
“Tell Me” was inspired by a conversation Jenni overheard at a restaurant. The girl was talking loudly on the phone and kept saying, “tell me” and “who does he think he is?” She took that as inspiration and filled in the rest of the story. It has a simple melody and a barrage of textures and sounds, strung together by a tribal beat and groovy bass hook. Instrumentally, it has a lot of layers and highlights everyone in the band. “Tell Me” is a good middle ground for the album, which ranges from driving and epic to soft and lyrical.
