Los Angeles alt rock band impresses with hypnotic new single & video
Mad About The Boy is an alternative rock band from Los Angeles comprised of singer-guitarist Walker Ashby and singer-bassist Skyler Conner. They conjure smoky, hypnotic sounds that blend elements of bar room blues and shoegaze; their debut LP Top Earner was a favorite of ours back in 2020. Now, Mad About The Boy are back with another single, the spacey and languid “Meet The Mayor,” along with its vivid accompanying music video – which Ashby also directed.
“Meet The Mayor” opens with a swirl of ominous guitar and bass tones, with Ashby and Conner trading off vocal duties and harmonizing to mesmerizing effect. As they croon pained, longing words of “Burn the city down/ I could be your girl/ We could burn together/ I could watch you burn,” the track’s unique sonic layers ebb and flow and intensify. It’s a simmering, meditative slow-burn comprised of smoldering sounds and confessional lyrics.
Meanwhile, the video clip – with cinematography by Ma’ayan Amit – is as colorful as it is gothic, with scenes of Ashby and Conner dressed in dapper attire and lounging at an empty horse racing track, watching the world go by. There’s also moody shots of Ashby performing in the back of a limo and Conner singing by a darkly-lit indoor pool, and nighttime views of the L.A. skyline. It’s a wondrous video that matches the haunting intensity of the song. You can watch it HERE.
Additionally, Mad About The Boy have plans to release their sophomore album sometime this year. Until then, you can also listen the single version of “Meet The Mayor” below:
