The San Diego music festival returns to downtown’s Seaport Village on May 16-18
Wonderfront Festival, the annual music and arts fest located in downtown San Diego, returns to picturesque Seaport Village on May 16-18 with a stacked, diverse lineup that includes headliners Peggy Gou, Anderson .Paak, Khruangbin, and more.
Located right on the waterfront overlooking San Diego bay in Seaport Village, Wonderfront has become a staple of the city’s live music scene since its debut in 2019. After a few years off due to the pandemic, Wonderfront surged ahead the past three years, offering music fans a lively and diverse lineup of music spanning rock, rap, R&B, indie, and everything in between. This year features yet another deep program.
South Korean deep house superstar DJ Peggy Gou and Canadian R&B crooner Daniel Caesar top the lineup on Friday, May 16, which takes a more R&B, hip-hop, and EDM approach with its bookings. Other highlights of Day 1 include English DJ-producer Duke Dumont, Welsh breakbeat duo Overmono, bedroom R&B up-and-comer Nourished by Time, and rappers Isaiah Rashad, Freddie Gibbs, and Erick The Architect of Flatbush Zombies.
Saturday, May 17’s lineup is a bit more scattered stylistically, with alternative rock, hip-hop, R&B, and pop well-represented. Ventura County singer, rapper, and producer Anderson .Paak tops the bill along with L.A.-based alt rock staples Foster The People. The rest of Day 2 includes R&B titan Janelle Monae, psych-pop purveyors Portugal. The Man, indie sleaze faves STRFKR, local psych rockers Saint Luna, and our personal faves, critically-acclaimed indie pop breakout stars Magdalena Bay.
Finally, a more laid-back soft rock vibe takes shape on Sunday, May 18; headliners include Texas instrumental neo-psych trio Khruangbin, local San Diego pop rock icon Jason Mraz, and Texas blues rocker Gary Clark Jr. Other standouts on Day 3 include 00s adult contemporary pop rock band The Fray, newly reunited San Francisco indie rockers 4 Non Blondes, indie-folk superduo Julian Baker & Torres, and beachy acoustic rock singer-songwriter Donovan Frankenreiter.
Other spectacles include the Electric Lounge, an intimate dance club experience featuring DJ sets throughout the whole weekend. There’s also games, a craft beer village, special bar and dining activations, large-scale visual arts, and even harbor boat cruises where fans can take a tour aboard party cat pontoon boats, VIP limo boats, or even the 550-person Adventure Hornblower that’ll host bands and DJs. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind festival experience that encapsulates downtown San Diego’s vibe.
