Australian garage-punks get loud & rowdy in New York City

It was a loud and rowdy night at the Rooftop at Pier 17 on Thursday night, as Australian garage-punks Amyl and the Sniffers returned to New York City and delivered a set full of galvanizing, defiant upbeat energy. Amy Taylor fired up the crowd with her ferocious vocals and jaw-dropping physicality – writhing and thrashing around on stage – as mesmerized fans showed they were eager to join in on the fun by moshing and crowdsurfing nonstop from start-to-finish.

At one point, bassist Gus Romer remarked that he could see the Statue of Liberty from onstage, “not bad for a boy from the country.” The band stacked the setlist with tracks from their most recent album Cartoon Darkness while also adding in a healthy dose of fan-favorites off their self-titled album and Comfort to Me. Before introducing “Knifey,” Amy spoke to the crowd about femicide, and urged male audience members to check their friends and prevent them from acts of violence towards women.

Earlier in the night, Philadelphia garage rock staples Sheer Mag played a fantastic opening set. All in all, a killer night of live music in NYC. Go ahead and scroll through the gallery below for some of the highlights.
