It looks like they make 12-year old hipsters these days and that they’re taking our “all-ages” guarantee seriously. And good for them, they’re way ahead of the curve (as long as none of the ladies who wanted to take them home as toys got hold of ‘em). By the time they’re like the 20-something geezers who messed around and “got into it” at our show on Saturday, the bands they caught before they’d ever popped a zit will be legendary, broken-up media moguls or Iron Maiden-like gods, touring the world in their own jet. Or maybe just playing Death by Audio.
We are in the habit of booking bands we like, and this puts us in the pleasing position of watching kids discovering their new favorite music. Easily the biggest comeuppance crowd surprises came from Boogie Boarder, Say No! To Architecture and Sisters, all of whom were a mystery to many who came to see the likes of Anamanaguchi, Dinowalrus, and Dan Friel, and all of whom snatched that elusive live pulse that sends a crowd into rhythmic conniptions. But lest we forget the flavor of other personal favorites— Pink Skull’s Afro-beat-kraut-funk, Gary War’s slithering garage pulse, Silk Flower’s Black-Dice channeling Ian Curtis and house, Talk Normal’s pitch-perfect no wave (recently picking up bits of pure vocal melody)… If you missed it you can now kick yourself.
