Chicago MC Kweku Collins is making himself known with a melodic, introspective brand of Trap, as typified by “Aya,“ a pensive collaboration with Allan Kingdom. The song’s structure belies the typical trap conceit, structured almost like an indie rock balled with a familiar refrain at the beginning of each verse. The songwriting approach belies Collins’ eclectic musical tastes and skill to fuse elements together.
Kingdom matches Collins with an equally melodic verse, following up on the song’s theme before
“there is nothing really I can tell ya, just gonna do the best thing for you.”
Video director Cody LaPlant did the best things with this video, craftily alternating scenes of Collins with Kingdom, and vibing out to the atmospheric production in a field.
“Aya” is a track from Collins’ critically-acclaimed Grey EP, which is out now via Closed Sessions.
