On a day like this, it’s good to fixate on positive emotions like love. That’s just what Chicago rapper Sage The 64th Wonder delivers with “Spirit Wife,” the lead single from his upcoming Shikigami Jazz project. “This pretty lady walked across the aisle smiling,” he reflects, before going on a stream of consciousness about his immediate rush of feelings towards her.
Sage smoothly rides the groovy Emperor Bohe production, sliding through musings on him “having a grand future and a wonderful story” and needing help to put the right words to utter to his “Spirit Wife.”
He eschews a hook and lets the groove ride out until he jumps into the next verse, where true headway is made. Over e-mail, Sage says the song is about a “muse” of his. He noted that he was reading comics in the studio and randomly got a “wave of inspiration” to write about her. The same way she gave him a wave of feelings when she first walked by.
Shikigami Jazz has no release date, but you can stream “Spirit Wife” in the meantime.
