In 2000, Elsieanne Caplette and Stephane Sotto met in their hometown of Montreal. Caplette’s musician/composer/producer persona blended instantly with Sotto’s drummer side, resulting in the trip hop duo, Elsiane. Their music has touches of essential artists on the opposite spectrums– Craig Norris of CBC Radio 3 said, “If Bjork and Billie Holiday had a baby it would be Elsiane…” A listen to one track by Elsiane reaffirms this, as Caplette’s vocals draw hints of classical but both jazz vocal techniques, entrancing the listener with each syllable.
“Unstable” is the duo’s first song in four years, and it is part of their latest album, Death of the Artist. The track presents Elsiane’s expected unpredictability– soaring vocals with a layer of dreamy confusion accompany Sotto’s hazy beats. “Unstable” listens like a long night drive down a winding road, spewing uncertainty. After experiencing battles within the music industry and its corporate side, Elsiane wanted the latest album to be an exploration of sticking to your guns, and “Unstable” shows this. Their experimentation feels right, and leaves you glad that the duo won’t kowtow to the industry anytime soon.
Death of the Artist will be released in early 2017.
