Art Contest is two speed demon southerners who make psych rock that is technical and breezy. In the band’s newest track, “Sports,” Art Contest goes at it, orchestrating tight lines of math rock infused guitar, chopping drumming and energetic vocals. “Sports” feels like freak folk: it’s a song that name checks the kinds of noise made by an early Animal Collective.
Art Contest’s music is smart as hell but also flat out goofy and jumbled. “Sports” feels like a sweaty day at the beach. In all of its intricate guitar work and attention to detail it is also just flat out fun, hot summer day rock music.
