“Witness” by Sweden’s Makthaverskan is a luring post-punk death-threat. The Gothemburg quintet subverts arena-ready amplitude with the spirit of goth-rock as Maja Milner howls “My enemy/I bury you.” The tone is ominous, as the band’s cross-pollination of 80s shoe-gaze and Slavic doom strikes a fine balance of original and derivative, like an homage to something yet to happen. With tumbling percussion and sinister guitar leads, “Witness” is undoubtedly the sound of an all-consuming desire for revenge. The single is set to drop on Record Store Day as a 7″ to promote Makthaverksan’s upcoming U.S. tour with Self Defense Family.
