Think quick: what’s the last thing you re-purposed from 1997? I’m sure it has sentimental value to you, but probably not many others outside your extended circle. Perhaps that’s even the case with the ruckus vocal samples in Wisconsin producer Orange Drink’s latest track, “Sleeve of a Tweed Jacket”–but it still sounds good.
The track’s base is a melancholy, slightly delayed guitar loop that sounds like the perfect tune for cruising down the highway, reminiscing on old times. Perhaps that’s what Orange Drink had in mind with the late December-released track, hashtagged #nostalgia on Soundcloud. Other bright, lithe guitar plucks further feed the feels, wading in and out over top of the minimalist drums.
Orange Drink flips and filters vocals of he and his friends which were ripped from a cassette tape according to him. The echoing, muddy samples tinge the track with a slightly experimental, enigmatic energy. The track is a strong hip-hop, electronic, and folkish fusion—which is probably the last thing his friends thought they were contributing to 20 years ago. You can stream below.
