The London-based alt pop duo’s debut album is also in the pipeline – via Submarine Cat
Welcome to autumn where life gets a little bit better all around. Chilly weather gives way to warm tunes that soothe the energy that blew up this summer. A fine example of such musical magic comes from Prima Queen, who have just released their ideal fall track, “Fool”, that welcomes fans to their sound. With an announcement of their upcoming album to follow, these musicians are eager to jump into the scene and give the masses what they want.
The track is poppy right from the start with vocals that are sweet to ensnare the ears. Catchy pop and alt rock dances on through and harmonies seal the deal. Listeners will feel joy immediately and relish the taste for as long as they can. Prima Queen succeeds in purely tapping into an optimistic sound that bounces along with a groove that matches the energy the duo put out into the world. With a pep in one’s step, fans will be radiating the power of the fool as ignorance is sometimes bliss. Let the world pass on by.
The duo, Louise Macphail and Kristin McFadden, went into great detail on this new body of work and the process that came into it all.
What was it like working with Steph Marziano on this track? Were there any memorable moments you would like to share?
It was amazing working with Steph because we really clicked with her instantly and created a really special friendship. We made the record at a residential studio called Angelic and it felt like every night we were just having a big slumber party, doing face masks and watching rom coms. She really got our vision and because of this the whole process was really smooth.
This record is definitely the most like us we’ve ever sounded! Halloween of last year was the first day of recording the album so Steph enforced a strict dress up code. She came as Prima Queen and we came as Regina George’s mum from Mean Girls and Trinity from The Matrix.
What new things did you attempt in this new release? Were there specific additions that you played around with?
Steph really pushed us to do more than we’ve done before on our previous recordings; more harmonies, more guitar parts, etc… We were so used to recording songs we’ve played live a lot so recording these new songs allowed us to be a lot freer with part and experimentation.
How did you celebrate this song going live?
Louise: We went for a pizza! I got a cheeseburger pizza which I actually wouldn’t recommend. It had mayo on top which I thought sounded exciting but actually was quite gross.
Kristin: I got spicy sausage.. which was amazing except the bottom went soggy…I miss American pizza!!
What are your hopes for the rest of the year and leading into 2025?
We really hope we get to do our biggest tour yet – in the EU and USA and also…
Louise: Learn to do a headstand and to drive.
Kristin: Go into nature more and finish all the half read books I started this year.
Who are some musicians that you think are pushing the boundaries these days and why?
Chappell Roan (obviously), Charli XCX (obviously), Adrianne Lenker (her prolific songwriting), Dora Jar (so weird and fun but still so accessible), The Japanese House (soundscapes combined with her songwriting feels so unique), Amaarae and Jenny Hval (both use multiple genres within their work).
