Ratking would only be a fraction of what they are if it weren’t for ambitious producer, Sporting Life. His production has aided in putting Ratking past your normal hip hop group and into something much more innovative. His eclectic, attention-deficit beats are a hallmark of Ratking’s sound, providing a constantly shifting back drop for an intense rhythmic experience. The production on “Canal” is proof enough that Sporting Life is changing the game; his fearless use of unconventional sounds and effects is but one reason Ratking has received an “experimental” tag.
What you may not know is that the Ratking crew hosts a blog and label called Letterracer, which they use as an online space to host artists they appreciate and are affiliated with. On the site you can hear various Sporting Life demos that he’s been periodically releasing for the last month or so. The various tracks are at times more like lil snippets of larger pieces, they have potential to stand alone or act as a backdrop for something bigger. Overall the tracks are rather different than what we hear in Ratking’s production. They range in styles, some on the trap side of things, others explore pop, but each is an inviting exploration of rhythmic sonic sculpting.
