Back in the ‘90s, emo band Braid was living their glory days, with Chris Broach sharing duties on vocals and guitar. After Braid broke up, Broach formed The Firebird Band, releasing a couple of records in the ‘00s. Most recently, Broach teamed up with Steve Znavor (The Firebird Band, Life at Sea) to form Sunset. The electronic duo will be releasing their debut, Turn Out The Lights via Broken World Media on April 7th. Produced by Will Yip (Circa Survive, Turnover), the new endeavor is a refreshing take on darker indie rock, mixed with plenty of electronic moments.
On “Remember How It Ends,” Broach mixes his rock background with his newer electronic pursuits, blending the two genres together seamlessly. The track feels like a fusion between Death Cab for Cutie’s Kintsugi and Brand New’s The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, jumping between synth filled melancholy and pure angst. For Broach, the track has a deeper, personal meaning, revolving with his struggle to stay clean. “It’s sort of a reminder to look ahead at what will happen if I decide to drink. Put the tape in, press play, and watch it to the very end so I can remember the ending – and how much I need to avoid that ending, if I want to stay healthy and happy,” Broach added. It’s always admirable when a musician channels their personal struggles into creating innovative tracks.
