New York musician shines with his latest set of “cumbiagaze” jams

One of our favorite rising artists of the last couple years, NYC’s Tambino returns with his latest EP Sin Miedo, which sees him further exploring his unique sonic rabbit hole of shoegaze, dream pop and cumbia fusion (which he’s coined as “cumbiagaze”).

Following in the vein of his 2020 self-titled EP, the Peruvian-born, Brooklyn-based artist alternates English and Spanish-sung lyrics with soothing effect. Glitchy hip-hop and club beats on opener “Estos Dias” run alongside shimmering synths and guitar feedback, which snowballs later on the crunchy piano-tinged shoegaze ballad “NY DAZE.” on “Deseo,” Tambino dives deep into the reggaeton vibes via squiggly synths and hypnotic vocal harmonies before ending on the effervescent bass-laced dream pop-funk fusion number “Las Tardes.” Overall, Sin Miedo is his boldest and most diverse release yet, featuring excellent experimentation and melding of styles, lush instrumentation and dynamic songwriting.

Tambino had this to say about the record:

“‘Sin Miedo’ translates to ‘Without Fear.’ I got the phrase from a soccer documentary in which a striker was talking about their ideal mindset before playing a big game. He said, ‘you have to play SIN MIEDO.’ It’s kind of turned into a life mantra for me. The EP’s four songs show four different shades of this project’s sound. There’s a baile funk synth ballad, a dream pop-meets-hip-hop 808s song, a Hot 97-inspired clave pop track and a continuation of the cumbiagaze thing. It’s a labor of love. Hope you enjoy.”
