In the vein of another Los Angeles queen of darkness, Chelsea Wolfe, Tropic of Cancer make music that is both unforgiving and elementally rough. Though we tend to save our “Harshed” subcategory for music that is a little tougher and more abrasive, “Court of Devotion” works so hard (and so well) at pulling every shred of being from our hearts that the result is an ultimate feeling of being harshed and beaten down. It's subtle in its delivery—Camella Lobo's vocals are hollow and the timbre is slightly off, rendering the song's tone into unnerving territory. The consistent electric drum beat behind the track only adds to the persistent discomfort.
Restless Idylls is Tropic of Cancer's debut album, and it's due out through Blackest Ever Black on September 23. Catch O'Connor's dark wiles at the European dates below.
