Members of Pussy Riot set for early release

After a year and a half spent in Russian prison camp for alleged “hooliganism,” Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina, the two remaining jailed women of the feminist punk band Pussy Riot are set to be released within two weeks. The release comes over six months before their two-year sentence was to expire, under an approved presidential amnesty. Their names are on a list of Russian convicts to be set free in a “show of compassion to mark the twentieth anniversary of the Constitution of the Russian Federation.” Three members of Pussy Riot were arrested in March 2012 for a protest against Valdimir Putin. The third member, Yakaterina Samutsevich, was freed in October 2012.
