I wrestled with the idea of posting about Stephen Colbert testifying before Congress about immigration for a few moments, then I started reading all the conservative backlash.
Therefore I felt it necessary to point out Stephen Colbert's one moment of candor, when he dropped out of character and answered Judy Chu's question of why, out of all the issues he could talk about, or bring
attention to, he decided to get involved in this one.
“I like talking about people who don't have any power… I feel the
need to speak for those who can't speak for themselves… We ask them to
come and work, and then we ask them to leave again… They suffer, and
have no rights.”
He also quoted Matthew 25:40 from the Bible: “The King will
reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of
these brothers of mine, you did for me.'”
I find this important to note, because the hypocrisy of the “religious right” is one of my biggest pet-peeves when it comes to issues of class and racism. Whether or not Jesus liked gays can be debated, but no on can deny the fact Christianity (like most religions) is based upon helping those less fortunate. Something they tend to overlook.
Seriousness aside, watch some of the funnier moments below, including his opening statement (in character), or head to the Huffington Post for a great, and rather impartial recap.
