Blind Girls @ The Che Café

The Australian band anchored an incredible night of screamo in San Diego along with Richmond, Virginia’s Ostraca

Earlier this month, Blind Girls released their incredible and devastating new LP An Exit Exists, one of our favorite albums of the year so far. With this record, the band from Gold Coast, Australia – fronted by the tenacious lead singer/screamer Sharni Brouwer – have cemented themselves as one of the very best screamo bands in the world. That fact was on full display this past Friday as they came through and galvanized a ferocious, adoring crowd at San Diego’s legendary DIY venue The Che Café.

In a tightly-packed half-hour set, the band scorched through a series of tracks off their previous couple albums, balancing rough-and-tumble instrumental grit with cathartic, passionate screams from Brouwer – who thrashed, throttled, and writhed around on the empty floor space that formed in the front of the crowd. Brouwer’s stage presence was mesmerizing and intoxicating as she remained in lockstep with the band’s careening riffage, throttling rhythms, and insane time signatures. A ruthless mosh pit formed in the back of the hole-in-the-wall venue, and the band and crowd maintained a fiery energy from start-to-finish. A rare U.S. tour from the group resulted in a treat for everyone in attendance.

Earlier in the night, L.A.’s Nuvolascura and Richmond, Virginia’s Ostraca helped kick the night into high gear, and a headlining performance from scene staples Lagrimas capped off a spectacular night of screamo in San Diego.
