Indiana lo-fi rockers drop DIY video for lead single off forthcoming LP
Last month, Indiana lo-fi rockers Hoops announced their reunion after a brief hiatus, and shared news of the release of their forthcoming sophomore LP Halo. They also dropped the album’s lead single “Fall Back,” a gorgeously whirring, woozy slice of garage dream-pop. And now today, the trio of Drew Auscherman, Kevin Krauter and Keagan Beresford have unveiled the music video for that track, directed with crafty DIY aplomb by Alex Julian Leeds.
Featuring grainy camcorder-like footage and plenty of bubbling fish-eye lens shots, the video follows Auscherman riding around town and performing the track in an empty swimming pool. Lens flares, black-and-white filters, and a pervasive rambunctious energy round out the clip, while there’s even some neat shots of him shredding the flying V guitar to boot.
After releasing their critically acclaimed debut LP Routines in 2017, Hoops looked poised for a major breakthrough, but instead the band members announced an indefinite hiatus, citing personal and creative fatigue. Since then they’ve returned to their hometowns to work on solo material and other side projects. Notably, Krauter has gone on to a successful solo career in the shoegaze/dream-pop realm, releasing a pair of excellent albums in 2019. Late last year Beresford called up his former bandmates to gauge their interest in reforming.
“I missed working with those guys,” he said. “I’d been writing these songs and I thought we could do well together. They’re my best friends and my favorite collaborators, so I was happy they were so receptive to it.”
The band soon reconvened in Bloomington, Indiana to workshop new tracks, and they’ve since emerged stronger and closer for the time they’ve spent apart.
“This record is a more honest representation of our influences and interests as musicians,” says Auscherman. “We’ve grown a lot in four years, as people and as listeners. We’re starting to sound more like ourselves.”
Hoops’ Halo arrives on Oct. 2 via Fat Possum. You can pre-order it HERE, and check out the video for “Fall Back” below.
