Philadelphia-based musician Cumquat has been sampling a wide variety of sound effects, creating abstract, electro-pop music that is almost earth-shattering in its composition. He just released a collection of five experimental songs on a white cassette with a double sided color insert titled Prickly Glazer. Take a listen below.
Cumquat inserts celestial-driven sounds in the first track “Gush (She Pays Bail)”, an almost creepy undertone to it all, especially as it fades out into the second song “Consciousness Is My Trigger”. At almost twice the time of the first track, this one holds a definitive bass line, something the first track was lacking (but didn’t necessarily diminish it by any means). The most layered track on the album – “Bering Strait” – hits hard from the beginning, and its wide range vocals add depth that wasn’t previously accounted for by Prickly Glazer.
“Cucumber” has a frantic sound to it, almost like children versions of inanimate objects are giggling at you. (Does that make sense?) The chanting-like vocals make you feel like you’re in another universe altogether. The work is rounded out by “Free Market Pangloss”, arguably the most danceable track. It has more modern synth sounds, and is every bit entrancing.
