Landlady, “Under The Yard”

Adam Schatz might be the most prominent musician in New York you’ve never heard of. Aside from his work in bands like Father Figures and now Man Man, he’s accompanied countless more—usually on the sax—and produced jazz and alt performances throughout the city for nearly a decade. Those who are familiar with his work are happy to see that Schatz has found a project he can call his own, and one that can live within his brand of musicianship. Weird, but not for the sake of being so, Schatz’s tastes are all over the map, and his new project Landlady is the perfect culmination of them all with a honed and often restrained pop sensibility.

The video for “Under The Yard”, from their recently released Upright Behavior LP, offers a glimpse at claymation lifecycles of birds, caterpillars and plants. An appropriate analogy for Schatz work. On Landlady he blossoms, but not without all of his eccentric beauty. Oh, and he sounds a bit like TV On The Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe on this track, which will likely be referenced in every review you read.

Landlady’s Upright Behavior is out now on Hometapes.
