Oftentimes, there is rarely a better concept for a music video than a well-choreographed dance sequence. This usually mean big budget productions featuring large casts, elaborate sets, and many gyrating hips. This all falls under the umbrella of mainstream pop music. But Montreal post-punkers Ought have turned the formula upside-down with the release of their video for “Pleasant Heart”, which proves that a well-choreographed video does not have to be a spectacle.
Modern dance works unexpectedly well for Ought. The dance, which takes place in a boxing studio, is minimal yet entrancing, and is a perfect match for the explosive melancholy of “Pleasant Heart”. The video, which features the dancing of Kiera Hill, is directed by Lara Oundjian and choreographed by Kaitlyn Ramsden.
