Austin, Texas Hip-Hop duo Holiday Mountain recently released their debut album SHIA, which is exactly what you’re thinking—an album inspired by the reclusive actor Shia LeBeouf. If the premise of the Electronic, Hip-Hop and Cumbia-fusing album isn’t attention-grabbing enough, the borderline-surreal video they’ve released for their “Buffin’” track is a strong second effort
The duo, comprised of Laura Patiño and Zander Kagle, note that “internet culture and the absurd” are huge inspirations for their visuals, and “Buffin” is a surefire exemplar of that claim. Carrying technical similarities with their “Cómo Te Llamas?” video, “Buffin” is a “tongue-in-cheek depiction of the generalized ‘hot mess/crazy chick’ character and what relationship obsession can look like in the digital age,” the group revealed via e-mail.
Edited by Holiday Mountain drummer/producer Zander Kagle, the video is a glitchy hodgepodge of animal clips, nickelodeon slime dumps and more as the duo—with backup dancers Katie Drackert and Alice Geaccone—dance around, playing up the character portrayed in the lyrics.
The album theme makes it’s way into this song through the chorus, as the “buffin’ out I’m Shia” chorus is a nod to the movie star’s public outbursts. His infamous green screen motivational speech also intermittently pops up in the video. Count how many times you can spot it in the midst of the visual circus.
