Flume, the 21 year-old Sydney-based beatmaker, is going places at a 4G pace. His self-titled debut is certified gold in Australia and after a February release on Mom + Pop, the album is getting a 4-disc Deluxe Edition in November that includes unreleased remixes, a mixtape, a DVD and an Abelton producer disc. Selah.
More will be revealed on the mixtape as the leaves drop in October, but the first offering comes in the form of a re-work for album cut “Holdin' On”, now featuring the gruf delivery of Freddie Gibbs. The remix seems well-timed, as yesterday Danny Brown's OLD streamed online, a record featuring both Freddie Gibbs and collaborations with Purity Ring and Charli XCX. It's almost hard to believe the cross-pollination of genres come this far. Well out of its awkward phase – which had its share of terrible marriages – Gibbs over Flume's gospel samples pitted against synth flourishes flat out works. The soulful touch to “Holdin' On” gets further validation from one of rap's most outspoken figures when it comes to defining real versus fake.
Flume's Deluxe Edition is out November 8 on Mom + Pop.
