Marrow – former members of Kids These Days (which also featured Vic Mensa and Donnie Trumpet), and former high school friends – are unique young stars, rising alongside their compatriots (like the aforementioned artists, Chance The Rapper, and Spencer Tweedy). Grounded in jazz and classical training, the rock music they make is technical but not in any way cold. When singer and keyboardist Macie Stewart sings “I won’t be misunderstood, I won’t be a fool,” in the track they premiere here, there is sincere steeliness in her silken voice. Marrow play with time signatures, key changes and syncopation in a way few young guitar rock bands do, and they do so to great emotional effect. There’s something truly magical in hearing and/or watching a band of close friends play, communicating changes and sharing secret smiles, and Marrow exude that fascinating synchronicity and warmth.
