Proving to be more than a message board, Philaflava.com is investing in the rappers and producers that frequent the boards with The Philaflava EP Series.
After the success of posse cuts and compilations compiled by artists and producers for the site, Alaska (formerly of Definitive Jux group Hanger 18 and regular on the boards) organized an EP series along with website founder Jason Gloss. Big Scen's stand out appearance with “Represent To The Fullest” on the Philaflava Project, a compilation last summer, impressed the right people. He was chosen to be the first artist to release an EP.
At 23 years of age, Scen shouldn't feel too much regret about putting the education on hold to pursue music. He's yet to drop an official debut, making No Days Off a stellar introduction to a young talent with room to grow – especially if he's sincere about the work ethic. Scen makes the most of the opportunity as he's matched with some producers on the rise in Equalibrum, Falside, dirtybird beats, Rosario and Chance Random.
Scen's style is classic boom bap throwback. He's got a powerful voice that commands attention to his battle-minded lyrics. But, it's not all bravado and swag. On “Sometimes I Hate My Style” Scen turns his rap criticisms back on himself with lines like “Plus on tracks I lie just a little bit / and when I rhyme I whine like a little bitch / I love boom bap / but sound so emo / closer to doing a song with Slug than Premo.” It's not too common for a rapper trying to make a name for himself to be honest of his short comings, unless it's presented in a humorous manner. Scen is clearly trying to set new standards as to how a rapper should sound.
