As we often discuss in this column, Los Angeles truly is an enriched entertainment landscape of opportunity by way of innovation & infinite possibilities. Home to an ever-changing & developing span of scenes & styles, the most attention capturing artists are the underground upstarts that emerge with an autonomous banner of independence that challenges the creative norms through the introduction of evolved traditions & conventions. Expanding the introspective nature of the hip hop game paradigm is Cool Calm Chrys who returns with another one from his Quick Strikes series with Quick Strik 002 titled “Fuck It” ft. Jessie Reyez. Produced by Abel Petit, Chrys recounts a past relationship that didn’t pan out with shrugged-shoulder honesty. “I worked on a beat by Abel Petit where he samples an amazing song from Jessie Reyez,” Chrys explained to us, “This song is about an ex-girlfriend and was super cathartic to get off my chest.”
Cool Calm Chrys on “Fuck It” sorts through the emotions leftover in the aftermath of a breakup. Meditations on past situations & the pains that remain are addressed in earnest as Abel Petit’s production accentuates the feelings of the past & their relevance in the frame of the present. The Jessie Reyez sample loop reiterates the titular breaking point, where Abel keeps the atmosphere thoughtful & calm as Chrys’s lyrics press for a certain spiritual & mental clarity on complicated matters of the heart & soul. Aspects of ego are subverted as CCC approaches the scope of the relationship in a narrative that tackles the blindness of love, repeated histories & the eternal influence of matriarchal wisdom. The beauty of “Fuck It” is how Chrys never reduces the entire matter, accepting all the involved human faults in expressions that seek a more openness of the heart & mind, with the ability to accept & better understand each other & how (& why) things can go wrong (or at least not the way we always want things to go in life).

Cool Calm Chrys described the inspirations behind the new Quick Strike 002 single “Fuck It” with following insights:

This song has hands down been the most cathartic. I went through a tumultuous relationship for a few years and this was one of the first times that I was able to be honest with myself about what happened. When I heard that Abel Petit produced track with the amazing Jessie Reyez sample, it just all clicked. I free-styled most of the first verse just sitting in my house thinking about the past. I hope you enjoy it and hopefully maybe it will help someone out there going through the same circumstances. The past is sometimes the muddiest waters to wade through. But getting through that swamp of emotion usually leads to clearer and more calm waters. This song is like a therapy session that you the listener gets to sit in on. Enjoy, and don’t hold too much against me!
