In the latest news on the anti-Kremlin feminist group Pussy Riot, one third of the original group jailed, Maria Alyokhina, has now begun a hunger strike. When Alyokhina was denied the right to appear at her own parole hearing, she was videoed in for the day-long proceedings, at which she was asked to fax any necessary information to the three-person panel. At the end of the day today, Alyokhina announced, “Let the troika sitting here—the judge, the prosecutor and the colony employee—decide my fate,” and then began her hunger strike. A statement from Alyokhina in a letter she wrote to Radio Svoboda states that she thinks all of her parole hearings are “boring and predictable.”
The two members of Pussy Riot still in jail, Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, are scheduled to be released next March after serving a two-year sentence for “hooliganism.” Free Pussy Riot.
