In July, Toronto-based “ASTRO-BEAT” trio Absolutely Free shared a single from their debut self-titled full-length, and it’s a floaty, energetic whirlwind of a track. Now they’ve released another one, “Vision’s”, this time combining elements of krautrock and pop for a sound that’s funky and undeniably catchy.
The song starts off discordant with a mesh of old samples and then gathers momentum into a high-powered pop tune. A backing of quick percussion lays the framework for lots of keyboard, string synths, and steady, heavily layered vocals. Tempered instrumental interludes explode out into warm and heady declarations: “Let your feelings go,” the group tells us through an envelope of rich, bright synth sounds. They succeed in conveying a vision of energy and positivity that’s totally danceable.
Absolutely Free is due out October 14 on Lefse. The band will be making stops all over North America so you can catch what’s bound to be a promising live set this fall.
