Steph Knipe asks, “Has anyone ever told you that it’s okay to cry,” in the opening line of Adult Mom’s uplifting pop track “Told Ya So” off their upcoming album Momentary Lapse of Happily. Aware of the way people are drawn to music to seek emotional guidance in the same way they would seek it from a sacred text or a parental figure, Knipe engages the listener directly on this “happy queer” song, but avoids sounding didactic by placing themselves on equal footing. After they admit, “I spent years ashamed of myself / Scared to cut the bad shit out of my life,” they put an arm around the listener and assure that “It is okay to feel doubt / But just know you’re gonna find a way out.” The most comforting thing about this promise is that once you achieve this sense of validation, you can rest assured that Adult Mom will be the first to taunt you with, “Told Ya So.”
Momentary Lapse of Happily is out July 28 on Tiny Engines. Stream “Told Ya So” below.
