Tim Sweeney’s illustrious Beats In Space program on WNYU has blessed the air waves with celestial dance movements since 1999. Back then he was a student with a Tuesday night to kill. Twelve years into BIS radio Sweeney reached a cult status with his radio show that transformed into pressing wax to preserve the artifice under the Beats In Space Records imprint. It began in 2011 with Paradis’ “La Ballade de Jim”, a Parisian duo covering 80s french artist Alain Souchon. Since then, Beats In Space has released 20 records.
To commemorate the milestone Sweeney put together a compilation aptly titled, BIS: 01-20. The comp reflects the label’s boundless mentality in pursuit of proper grooves. Beats In Space has traversed the Balearic with Tornado Wallace’s “Desperate Pleasures”, the blissful disco soul of House of Spirits’ “Hold On”, the studious phase-locking synthesizer sequencing of Tokyo’s Gonno on “Are You Asleep?”, and the vintage 80s synth acid of Palmbomen II.
As an added treat Beats In Space has released Tom Noble’s remix to House of Spirits’ “Hold On”. Transforming the extended disco single into a house rework that’s faithful to the retro timeline of dance history.
