Captain Supernova, “The Captain’s Theme”

Post Author:

There’s only a couple things that are certain about Captain Supernova so far: He loves synths, he loves da funk, and he doesn’t want us to know who he is… yet.

We are definitely thrown into a intergalactic setting with the first single, an instrumental groove called “The Captain’s Theme”. The intro put us in zero-gravity with elongated synths floating on air, and we know immediately that space is the place (yes, like the film written by Sun Ra). About one minute in we’re thrown into a synth funk groove that truly makes this song a theme for what’s to come. It’s not enough to provide a true grasp on Captain Supernova or what he’s all about, but it’s enough to have one wondering what’s coming next. An obvious comparison would be Daft Punk, mostly because Captain Supernova has presented himself as a character of sorts. In a short, stock-footage video entitled “Who is Captain Supernova” we witness a space mission gone wrong, a missile launch, and an astronaut thrown deep into space after his ship explodes. Could this be Captain Supernova?  An astronaut stripped of his planet and identity, destined to create synth-driven disco-funk songs for all eternity? The answer is unclear.

The debut EP is entitled Visions of the Unknown and will be released on December 2 via Bandcamp.
