Hear a demo of Generifus’ “Good Graces”

Generifus Spencer Sult

Generifus has shared a great deal with the world. After over a decade of releases, Spencer Sult‘s project out of Olympia has become deeply entrenched in the Pacific Northwest folk pop scene, which by now is as much indebted to him as he is to it. His third full-length, 2011’s I Don’t Have To Worry, marks the midpoint on a very packed timeline between the lo-fi experimentation of his teen years’ A Meeting and last fall’s nostalgic, hooky Extra Bad (about which Impose spoke with Sult in September). Recorded with the help of K Records stalwarts Karl Blau and LAKE, I Don’t Have To Worry still feels like as much of a deeply personal cathartic undertaking as a collaborative effort. It’s full of plain-spoken revelations and intimate narratives.

The demo for I Don’t Have To Worry‘s penultimate track—an honest, vulnerable song about faith and things falling into line—is fittingly solitary and unassuming. It’s included in a forthcoming physical re-release from It Takes Time Records, which additionally contains previously unshared songs, live tracks, and EP rarities—a welcome return for an album that was self-released and for the past five years has lived purely on Bandcamp, with “Good Graces” an appropriate beacon of that return. “I’ve come back in good graces,” Sult imparts with calm gratitude in the opening against a delicate acoustic guitar and glockenspiel. We peer into his backyard, where he’s rapt standing outside with his god keeping him warm, and the warmth swells with the steadying beat of the kick drum, into the refrain of “…I don’t have to worry now.” While in the album version he’s surrounded by a chorus of friends (including Mount Eerie‘s Phil Elverum), here reassurance comes from Sult alone. We’re gifted a sense of total relief, a long exhale.

I Don’t Have To Worry will be available on cassette April 1, and you can pre-order it now via It Takes Time.
