Maker, “A New Breed”

On a scale of 1-10 of music monikers, the name Maker is about as appropriate and simple as it gets – especially for a producer. Scrolling down my Soundcloud feed, the Chicago beatsmith/DJ’s name stood out amongst the others with FuNKy $peLLEd names that seem to all blend together nowadays. It’s a good thing “A New Breed,” a single from his Maker Vs. Now-Again V. 3 project, is capable of holding a listener’s attention .

Belying his name, the track is a stick-to-the-script homage to classic hip-hop. Chunky drums and a blaring horn mashes together for an experience that sounds like it could be an alternate theme for The Get Down. In an era teeming with electronic instrumentalists, it’s refreshing to see Maker make a bid – knowingly or not – that the craft can be replicated with the dusty break beats, surging blaxpoitation horns and suggestive vocal samples that define the “classic” hip-hop soundscape.
