“It’s impossible,” says Toronto songwriter Daniel Benjamin, one half of the shoegaze duo Moon King alongside Maddy Wilde. “The impossibility of finding a job, of making any money, of finding something to do in your life that you feel is worth doing and has meaning ….. also the impossibility of really caring for someone, really loving someone else when you have these hangups and ambitions and fears of your own to deal with. It’s about recognizing that it’s hard, and fighting for it. Like, fighting for yourself to get better.”
Those ideas are processed and reflected upon over slow-building shoegaze guitars on the band’s new single, “Impossible”, from their upcoming full-length Secret Life, out next week on Last Gang Records. The new album follows a string of releases, Obsession I and Obsession II, which were both released on Fucked Up’s label, One Big Silence. The band toured relentlessly in 2013, resulting in the sort of cathartic live energy that surfaces on the new songs. “Impossible” is streaming below.
