No Monster Club, “Arms Across America”

Dublin project No Monster Club fosters an affection for kitschy, homegrown video clips (a quick YouTube search reveals all). “Arms Across America” is the latest, starring frontman and leader Bobby Aherne. No Monster Club’s new record, People Are Weird, is out in January on Mirror Universe, and there’s no denying that Aherne’s own bizarre inclinations make for great pop music.

With its pleasant melody and euphoric background harmonies, “Arms Across America” is fuzzy, wonky pop at its finest, reminiscent of King of the Beach era Wavves. Aherne’s lyrics are stream of consciousness; one moment he’s ruminating on the “sublime,” the next, he’s wondering, “Is that a lava lamp?” Behind him, bright colors swirl in the backdrop. “Arms Across America” is equal parts sweet and silly, a combination that works in Aherne’s favor. Weirdo or not, his well-crafted bedroom indie positively oozes with charm. Stream “Arms Across America” below and check out a video for the track, too.
