“I’m here, I’m queer, I’m ill. No fear let’s be clear, I’m ill.”
And with that affirmation on “Yas Queen,” Radio Stevie is here. From New Haven Connecticut but living in Brazil, new artist Radio Stevie is empowered and strutting all over his debut RAP QUEEN EP. Released on Up Style records, the project uses electronic music as it’s base with elements of synth-pop, hip-hop, house, and funk strewn throughout the festive, empowering work. The EP is produced by DJ Flayva, a burgeoning Brazilian-American DJ who crafted four compositions with a stark contrast but the same invigorating energy.
Stevie says that he began writing the project earlier this year during Brazil’s Carnival. “I wanted this EP to feel like a celebration because I’ve waited for a moment like this my entire life.” He definitely fulfilled his intentions. In just 4 tracks, he manages to mark himself as a voice to look out for with a fun, dance-floor ready offering. Album standout “Get Down” is a particularly groovy electro-funk track with house elements that may make listeners do just what the titles suggests.
Speaking of titles, Stevie chose the EP’s intently, noting “if the words queen or queer makes people uninterested, or uncomfortable, that’s on them. But, I refuse to be disqualified for making the kind of music I want. I can only be myself and tell my stories in my own special way.”
