Rome Fortune had a strong 2016 with his Jerome Raheem Fortune album, and it looks like he’s aiming to double up on his Fools Gold success. The eclectic, irreverent rhymer is back, and he brought along frequent collaborator Toro Y Moi to helm the boards on yesterday’s double release. Both “BOO BOO MOBILE II” and “Leotard’ are experimental electronic/hip-hop fusions, but they’re on two completely different branches of the sonic tree.
“BOO BOO MOBILE II” is a dark, pensive trap burner where Rome implores the listener to “put the phone down for a minute,” admonishing those who are “holding scroll with no control” on their phones all day. If you’re listening to what Toro Y Moi cooked up outside, you may end up putting your phone down just because you think you’re in the midst of an ominous scene in a slasher flick.
“Leotard” is a freer track, relying on a frenetic, tinny synth that sounds like the weird cousin of the “Jigga What” beat. Rome rides the jaunty track with a melodic, flow, chasing down the beat’s every transition and finding the pocket. The two tracks are strong harbingers for his upcoming Beautiful Pimp III mixtape.
