Slam Skillet, Ecotone EP

The unsettling Euro-inflected twitches of New York's Slam Skillet were exhibited in his Oryx / Kirkii EP early last fall, and the method for heightening his impact comes with a stretched-out, gummier release in the Ecotone EP. The five-song offering reveals Sam Stevens to be more interested in pushing the boundaries of our understanding of artistically-driven dance music. The tones he uses are—for lack of a better word—sexy, and in a way that is unpretentiously subtle. You won't see Stevens leaving the listener behind as he plays around with washes of rain stick sounds, minimalistic high-hats, and breathy overtones that sound like they could burst, but rarely ever do.
