Slam Skillet, “Oryx” b/w “Kirkii”

Though he's only 20, New York based DJ Sam Stevens‚—better known as Slam Skillet—has been churning out a steady stream of jams for the past couple of years. Since his first EP in 2012 to last May's Rachis, Slam's music has metamorphosed from experimental hip-hop inflected tracks to club-worthy bangers. This evolution of sound is evidenced by Slam's latest release, Oryx / Kirkii. The new tracks pick up where Rachis left off, with Slam continuing to develop his interest in syncopated beats and shuttering rhythms, this time borrowing from the aesthetics of Chicago house and UK jungle. Also evident is the influence of the producer's academic pursuits; as a student studying environmental biology and architecture, “Oryx” and “Kirkii” find the middle ground between natural soundscapes and geometrical rhythmic patterns.

Oryx / Kirkii is available now on Slam Skillet's Bandcamp.
