Unless an ice age strikes Southern California, the locale will forever have a skewed perception of the holiday season. In that So-Cal spirit of Christmas, rapper Speak teamed up with Caleb Stone (Dream Panther/Kilo Kish) to deliver holiday cheer to the dirtbags and degenerates on the Sex Quest EP.
Speak takes to the Sex Quest EP with a pride for being VIP on the naughty list. Caleb Stone curates a depraved vibe that creates placebo feeling of being on Xanax in the champagne room or severely blunted in an Echo Park bungalow with Alexander Spit. Speak is joined by Groundislava, Kitty, Sara Z, the aforementioned Spit, and “U Guessed It” producer Brandon Thomas, but even a collection of voices in the span of seven songs cannot detract from his loose cannon agenda. With drippy, boozy production that collapses the listener into an unexpected trapdoor to the dungeon of Speak’s conscious, the Sex Quest EP is a departure for the Gnarly One, trapped in a heart-shaped box rather than lit on lines in his superego.
