The lingering effects of Andy Animal's Birthday

White Mystery

Last Thursday a couple of your Impose faithfuls attended a show at the Cake Shop to scope performances by Warm Soda, White Mystery, Hector’s Pets and Thee Open Sex. Once we saw Andy Animal holding down the corner next to the shimmering streamers behind the stage, we experienced a flashback to this thing you may or may not remember us covering over the summer. Ah shucks, you remembered! You’re sweet, darling. And because of those indelible shots by Gretchen Robinette, it’s hard for us to forget Andy Animal’s Countrytime Meltdown Funabration Weekender 3-D as well.

Amongst the Meltdown alum present at the show were video artist B.A. Miale, White Mystery and Brooklyn’s own Hector’s Pets; albeit dashiki-less this go. While there weren't any of Miale’s projections of Andy’s Birthday dance supplementing the action, there were two particular songs by the aforementioned bands that tricked us right back into the meadow at Uncle Pete’s.

“Fun Times” is a track off of the forthcoming album TELEPATHIC by the Chicagoan brother-sister duo White Mystery. And because we’re down with Andy and his birthday, we know who Miss Alex White is talking about when she sings “Party with our friends at a psychedelic Meltdown. Big Foot Baby, you know how to rock it out!”

“MLTDWNMMMA” or “Meltdown Momma” is an unreleased ditty by Hector’s Pets about turnin’ on, tunin’ in and droppin’ the fuck out at the Meltdown. Whether or not Wet Pet got to, uh, “fuck” the girl on his arm in a tent is inconclusive, but I’m sure dude took a couple two-tree stimulating dips into the Esopus while the rest of the Pets serenaded him with those signature coos.

In observance of the reunion, I got up with Heavy Pet, Pocket Pet and both Miss Alex and Francis Scott Key White in the Cake Shop bathroom where Ty Segall first introduced us to “Goodbye Bread”.

Let’s see what the gang had to say about the inspiration behind those Melty cuts.

Francis Scott Key White: It’s a cosmic family, man. We’re all brought together through forces more powerful than ourselves, and we reflect on it and that’s sort of what happens.

Pocket Pet: Andy’s the man, man.

Heavy Pet: Our song “Meltdown Momma” was written before the Meltdown, I'd say almost with a faith towards that cosmic energy. Francis Scott Key White: Last year was our first one; we’d never been to one before. And it just blew our minds.

Miss Alex White: We didn’t think we’d be able to go, and we played a resort town in Long Lake, NY. We looked at a map and we were like, “Holy shit! We can totally make it. It’s only two hours away.” We showed up; there was no cellphone reception so no one knew we were coming. And we kind of emerged like spirits where everyone was trippin’ balls. It was a pleasant experience.

White Mystery’s self-release TELEPATHIC drops April 20 and is available for preorder here. Hector’s Pets just issued their first 7” single “Teenacher” through Burger City Rock N Roll.
