We could not be happier that Thrill Jockey has aged so finely, like a good wine. Along with signing tons of our favorite bands, treating them well (we've heard a Thrill Jockey contract is the fairest in the biz), and staying committed to producing quality products, they have managed to do something that most labels with similar convictions fail at: they have remained in business for twenty years. As a company only half their age, we can do nothing but look on in awe ad say “Congrats!”
That's not true. We can do something. We can attend these awesome shows they are putting on all over the country this fall with the help of their roster. That would be a good way to celebrate!
They are also honoring the creative contributions of their non-musical collaborators, including visual and video artists, by asking them to make something for the occasion completely free of Thrill Jockey's input. They could make a poster of a banana wearing a pair of glasses, but they probably won't, because so far they are classy folks like Dexterity Press, Crosshair, Sonnenzimmer, Birdmachine and Ryan Duggan, and probably more. Same with the videos, with the first one being announced coming from Portland artist Ashby Lee Collinson and featuring the music of Jason Urick. Also, they are doing some sort of experimental record with comedians recording two jokes – one filthy, one squeaky clean – and then people reacting to the jokes. Should be a funky fresh good time!
