San Francisco beatsmith Al Lover breathes the psychedelia of his city in every release he's dropped in the past two years. He's fed his beat fuggery through the veins of Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Bare Wires, Mikal Cronin, POW!, and Burnt Ones. He's worshipped Satan's tambourine. He's fried the brains of hippies and he's lamented the passing of MCA. It's been a heavy two years of druggy, boozy beat music that's made us proud to be amigos with Cool Al Lover.
Much like his Cave Music mixtape, Reverb Rap is an exercise in warping the everloving hell out of our favorite records, which in this case is of the hot tracks circulating on the hip hop blogs ilk. Some tracks need little assistance, like Gangrene's “Vodka & Ayahuasca”, which opens with the lines “this is an acid trip / rancid spit” like it was just begging for Al's filters, while the hazy bleeds offered to Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire's “Michael Dudikoff” and Action Bronson's “103 and Roosy” only make the tracks more sinister than in their original states.
