Adorned by only a black-and-white line drawing and some Arial italic font on their album cover, the band Yuppies gives little of themselves, if you're the type to judge by those details alone. The choice to be nominally under-decorated seems deliberate when you hear the first track from their self-titled record, “Hitchin A Ride”. The feel is raw and unfiltered, accompanied by giving, verbose lyrics that come through as one part aggressive and another part dissatisfied and uninterested. “Hitchin A Ride”, as was drawn to my attention by our gregarious founder, seems to be directly influenced by Mclusky, and also excerpts itself from contempary staples like Big Ups and Parquet Courts. Not surprisingly, Andrew Savage of Parquet Courts will be releasing their debut through Dull Tools—the two bands are cut from the same hyper-intelligent, disconcerted, punk cloth.
You can stream “Hitch A Ride” here, then preorder the record here. Catch the band on tour at the dates below, including a P. Courts show in New York in the fall.
