The last time I ran into Ramon was in 2009 outside of an art gallery in New Orleans, close to where he had been living at the time. It was a humid March night, pools of water and long grass grew in the vacant lots beside the gallery, and as I sat sipping my beer atop a low-elevated marble wall that surrounded the block, I spotted Ramon inching his way past the shadows.
Since 2005, Ramon has been crafting an ambiguous, transcendental kind of music, guided by his fast-plucking finger-nails and spider web falsetto. He performs under his grandmother’s name, Ramona Cordova. His first release, 2006’s The Boy Who Floated Freely, was a concept record; a surreal mix of pop balladry, vagabond busking, and soul-buttressed freak folk with a dark fairy tale storyline about a boy named Giver who washes up on an island.
Ramon, or Ramona as he becomes in the narrative he and his music share, is back, working out a new record and touring the east coast, up through Canada and back out west this winter. Check out his early winter tour dates playing alongside Westchester’s Space Ghost Cowboys, and be sure to listen to the stitched keys and bare bones of his two latest moon-drenched odes, “Spring” and “Hands of Heaven.”
